The population was 1,366 at the 2010 census. Castin is home to the Maine Maritime Academy, a four-year educational institution that graduates officers and engineers for the U.S. merchant marine and maritime industries. Approximately 1000 students are enrolled. During the French colonial period, Castin was the southern tip of Acadia and briefly served as the regional capital. In the 17th and early 18th centuries, New France designated the Kennebec River as the southern border of Acadia, which put Castin in Acadia. The city is named after Jean-Vincent d'Abbadie de Saint-Casten.
