Isfahan is a city in central Iran, famous for its Persian architecture. On the huge square of Naksh-e Jahan is the Imam mosque (the Shah's Mosque) of the 17th century, the dome and minarets of which are covered with mosaic and script. In the Ali-Kapu Palace, built for Shah Abbas and completed in the late 16th century, there is a music room and a veranda overlooking the fountains of the square. The Sheikh Lotfolli Mosque is known for its complex mosaic. The population in the city is the third in the country and is about seven million people.
