About Live Cam "Panorama of Historic district" in Tallinn
It is not easy to determine the beginning of the history of Tallinn. The place attracted attention as a suitable port area long before the first written sources mention the settlement.
The first traces of settlements on the territory of today's Tallinn come from the Kharyapa river basin in Keldrimäe, but they can not be directly connected with the city. The early history of Tallinn begins with the suburban Iru, where at the end of the first millennium a castle was built along with a nearby settlement. The castle was abandoned for unknown reasons at the end of the 11th century, and the Lindanis castle (Kolyvan in Russian sources) was built after a while on Toompea hill today - it was basically the center of the ancient district of Ravala (hence the German name Tallinn: Revel). The castle was erected, most likely, only to offer shelter in the event of an enemy attack and did not include any permanent settlement in the 13th century.
Trade routes in the Gulf of Finland became more widely used during the 9th and 10th centuries, thereby increasing the importance of the port of Tallinn. Perhaps there were seasonal settlements of Scandinavian and Russian merchants in place of the present lower city at the beginning of the 2nd millennium, but there is no clear evidence that is archaeological or written sources. A modern panorama of the Old Town was available today to every user, to whom it is interesting. This became possible thanks to the web camera and high-quality online broadcasting from it.
