Trieste is the capital of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region in the north-east of Italy. The port city occupies a narrow strip of land between the Adriatic Sea and the border with Slovenia on the limestone plateau of Kras. The appearance of the city was clearly influenced by Italy, Austria-Hungary and Slovenia. There is also a medieval old town, and an Austrian quarter in the style of neoclassicism. The population is about 200 thousand people.
