Montreux is an old resort town with a mild climate, located between steep hills and Lake Geneva. It is famous for the jazz festival, which is held in July. Sculptures and flowers and Mediterranean trees were planted on the embankments of the city, along which many magnificent buildings were erected in the Beautiful Age. On one of the coastal islands near Montreux there is a medieval Chillon castle with fortified walls, halls for official receptions and a chapel in which 14th century frescoes are preserved. The population of the city is 25,000 people.
