Port-de-Pays was founded in 1665 by French filibusters who were forced to leave the island of Tortuga due to the British invasion. From 1676 to 1711, the capital of the French colony of Saint-Domingo was located here, which was later transferred to Cap-Haitien. In 1679, the first uprising of slaves brought from Africa broke out in Port-de-Pays. In 1902 the city was almost completely destroyed by fire.
