Count Josip Jelacic-Buzimsky was born on October 16, 1801 in Petrovaradin, Military Frontier, Royal Hungary of the Habsburg Monarchy, now Vojvodina, Serbia, and died on May 20, 1859 in Zagreb. He was the commander of the Austrian Empire and the Croatian statesman - a landmark figure in Croatian history. Ban of Dalmatia, Croatia and Slavonia from March 23, 1848 to May 19, 1859. Known as an active participant in the suppression of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848-1849. He is also known for abolishing kmetstvo (a local version of serfdom) in Croatia.
