Paris is located in the North Central part of France. By road it is 450 kilometres (280 miles) South-East of London, 287 kilometres (178 mi) South of Calais , 305 kilometres (190 mi) South-West of Brussels , 774 kilometres (481 mi) North of Marseille , 385 kilometres (239 miles ) North-East of Nantes, and 135 kilometers (84 miles) South-East of Rouen. Paris is situated on the Northern part of the Seine, the river that here flows. The city can boast several prominent hills, the highest of which is Montmartre at the height of 130 m (427 ft). Montmartre got its name from the martyrdom of Saint Denis, the first Bishop of Paris, at the top in the year 250. Excluding the outlying parks of Bois de Boulogne and Bois de Vincennes, Paris covers an oval area of about 87 km, is surrounded by a ring road with a length of 35 km2 (22 miles), Boulevard Periferique. The last major annexation of the city in 1860 not only gave it modern form, but created 20 clockwise-rotating areas. In 1860 the area was increased to 86.9 km2 in the 1920-ies. In 1929, the forest parks of Bois de Boulogne and Bois de Vincennes was officially annexed to the city, bringing its area to about 105 km2.
