Funchal is the main city of the Madeira archipelago in Portugal. It is surrounded by mountains and famous for its marina, gardens and wine madeira. The centuries-old Funchal Cathedral is famous for elements of Romanesque and Gothic architecture and carved wooden ceilings. Near the pier rises the fortress of San Tiago, built at the beginning of the XVII century. Now it houses the Museum of Contemporary Art, which houses a rich collection of works by Portuguese masters. The population of the city is 120,000 people.
