Basilica of St. George on the island of St. George, or, as it is called, on the Isle of cypress or Memmius Island (named after the first owner). This island is located in the waters of St. Mark's Square, in front of the Doge's Palace.At 8 - 9 centuries, the island was built a church dedicated to St. George. In 982, the Doge Memmo rostrum handed island church with a Benedictine monk, Giovanni Morosini. Morosini built a monastery next to the church and became its first abbot. Church and Monastery repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt. Some surviving buildings of the 15th century now houses the Giorgio Cini Foundation.
